Finn's Desk

Our class is excited for Finn to return.  We've kept his desk by the door to keep him in our thoughts.  See you soon, buddy!

Mr. Schmidt

Classwork 11/2

Sorry, forgot to post yesterday.

Math: No homework.  We tried a different type of lesson in math on Friday, ask your child how they fared.  It was very interesting for me to see how they responded to the challenge.  Special adulation to David and Matthew, who both had to work through a few hurdles, and did so with positivity.  Everyone did a very nice job.

LA: Spelling tests are being corrected, no other homework.  Due to the short and crazy week, we did not have a WST, but we will have one every week through Thanksgiving break.  If you are looking for a way to help out your child on skills tests, take a look at their practice book (PB) throughout the week, because what we cover on the WST is always straight from the PB pages.

Science: Electric boxes were awesome- we had the chance to go show third grade our completed work.  Great job everyone.

SS/Science/Switch: We are now going to Ms. Groshens class three times a week for SS and science.  Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, a hour each day.  She will keep me updated on homework, and I will post it here.  Please contact me with questions.  We'll be going to Ms. Strantz's class for Q3.

Miscellaneous:

Please invite a veteran to our Veteran's Day program, which will be Monday, November 12th.  Sign up sheets have gone home- if you are missing one, contact Mrs. Skinner or myself, and we'll get you set up.

Continental math is going to be up and running soon.  This is a great opportunity for math expansion in ALL students, and is open to ALL students.  Mr. Groebner will be running the program Wednesday mornings at 7:45 right in our very own classroom.  Come one, come all.

Extra recess Monday if the Vikings can somehow find a way to beat the Seahawks.  SKOL!

Electric box project- students have been given topics, and are asked to decorate their box in the theme of their topic, as well as to draft a copy of the ten pairs of matching answers for Tuesday.  I will review them and we will print final copies on Tuesday.  We are assembling the boxes on Thursday.  The students should have some understanding of what to do, but here are some reminders:

Mr. C!

We are extremely fortunate to have a masterful teaching assistant working in our classroom this year!  Mr. Cummings has been at OLG a decade, and has extensive background experience as a classroom teacher.  I couldn't be happier and the students couldn't be luckier than to have Mr. C as our TA this year.

Mr. C. helping Sam construct geometric figures with a compass.  As Sam says, "Mr. C. is a great guy, and we're happy to have him around!"

Couldn't agree more, Sam.

Classwork 9/10

We had a great first Monday of the year together!

Math: SMJ 9-11
SL 1.4

LA: We launched our theme for the month, which is "Journeys".  We discussed what a journey is, as well as journeys we and people we know have taken.  We started our first story, "Akiak", and will finish it tomorrow.  The only assignment was PB pg. 9, which was completed in class.

Religion: We started Ch. 1 of our We Believe curriculum.  Today we learned that Jesus used a special name for God, which no one had ever used before.  Jesus called God "Abba", which means "Father".  We talked about some of our favorite teachings from the Gospels.  Thomas was especially vocal and helpful during Religion today.  Way to go, buddy!

Thanks, I hope to see you all tomorrow at Parent Information Night.  6:30 in Cassidy Hall.

Thanks everyone for such a great year in fourth grade.  This was a group of students that I will never forget.  Don't be afraid to practice those math facts this summer- the fifth grade teachers are counting on me to make sure you know them when you walk in the door next year.  It definitely doesn't hurt to set up some tutoring time, or work through a summer bridge book.  Keep those brains sharp!  Thanks again, have a great summer!

STREP

Strep has been identified in our room. Please follow these guidelines:

PARENT/GUARDIAN
Your child may have been exposed to:
Strep Throat
Strep throat and a strep throat with a rash (scarlet fever) are common bacterial infections in children.
If you think your child has Strep Throat:
• Tell your childcare provider or call the school.
• Need to stay home?
Childcare and School:
Yes, until 24 hours after antibiotic treatment begins and the fever is gone.
Children who test positive for strep but do not show symptoms do not need to be excluded. They are unlikely to spread the infection to other people.
Prevention
Symptoms
Strep throat - Your child may have a fever that starts suddenly, red sore throat, and swollen glands. Headache may occur. Children may have stomach pain and vomiting.
Scarlet fever - Rarely, a very fine raised rash appears at the same time as the throat soreness. The rash feels like sandpaper. The rash is most often on the neck, chest, elbow, and groin and in the inner thigh and folds of the armpit. Later on, the skin on the fingertips and toes may peel.
If your child is infected, it may take 2 to 5 days for symptoms to start.

Spread
- By coughing or sneezing.

Contagious Period
Until 24 hours after antibiotic treatment begins.

Call your Healthcare Provider:
If anyone in your home has symptoms. A doctor may
do a lab test and give antibiotics.
• Cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Use a tissue or your sleeve. Dispose of used tissues.
• Wash hands after touching anything that could be contaminated with secretions from the nose or mouth. Your child may need help with handwashing.
• Never share drink containers and cups or silverware. Wash all dishes with hot soapy water between uses.
• Clean and disinfect any objects that come in contact with the nose or mouth (especially mouthed toys). Use a product that kills germs.
For more information, call Hennepin County HSPHD-Epidemiology at 612-543-5230 or call your local health department.
