Mr. C!

We are extremely fortunate to have a masterful teaching assistant working in our classroom this year!  Mr. Cummings has been at OLG a decade, and has extensive background experience as a classroom teacher.  I couldn't be happier and the students couldn't be luckier than to have Mr. C as our TA this year.

Mr. C. helping Sam construct geometric figures with a compass.  As Sam says, "Mr. C. is a great guy, and we're happy to have him around!"

Couldn't agree more, Sam.

*Today we learned how to use the compass, as well as how to create perfect inscribed squares.  Some of the compasses are of a sorrier sort than the others- the best compasses by far are the old style metal ones.  If you see one of those (OfficeMax has them), snatch it up!

LA: We took our first selection test of the year for the story Akiak.  Students are asked to study spelling words for homework tonight.

SS: We continued work on our Parts of a Map packet (featuring the Southwest region of the U.S.).  The packet is due tomorrow in its entirety.

Spanish: Use wordreference.com to translate your four descriptions.
--> As always with Spanish, please contact Senora for more information

Thanks,
Mr. Schmidt

*Crowded points puzzle clue: the squares are concentric (they share the same exact center), and one of the squares is turned so it's standing up on its point (like a diamond).  Good luck!

Classwork 9/10

We had a great first Monday of the year together!

Math: SMJ 9-11
SL 1.4

LA: We launched our theme for the month, which is "Journeys".  We discussed what a journey is, as well as journeys we and people we know have taken.  We started our first story, "Akiak", and will finish it tomorrow.  The only assignment was PB pg. 9, which was completed in class.

Religion: We started Ch. 1 of our We Believe curriculum.  Today we learned that Jesus used a special name for God, which no one had ever used before.  Jesus called God "Abba", which means "Father".  We talked about some of our favorite teachings from the Gospels.  Thomas was especially vocal and helpful during Religion today.  Way to go, buddy!

Thanks, I hope to see you all tomorrow at Parent Information Night.  6:30 in Cassidy Hall.

We had another great day and another great Morning Meeting.  Here we see Matthew, Joe, Berit, Maria, and Finn trying to prefect our challenging MM activity.  By the end of the alotted time almost every student had some success.  Great job!

Classwork 9/4

We had a great first day together.

We worked on "All About Me" posters, and students are asked to bring a photo of themselves for the poster.  We will finish these by Friday.
If you wish, bring in a photo of your personal hero as well.  This space is small, about 2" X 2".

Kelly & Abbey, please remember your sharing item.

We also took a Mr. Schmidt quiz.  It was the hardest quiz of the year.

Thanks,
Mr. Schmidt
