Classwork 4/28

Math: SMJ 227-228
SL 8.3

LA: Levels
*Asking good questions (Expert Paper)
Students worked today to develop good lead questions about their expert topic that they will eventually develop into body paragraphs. Avoid questions that have one-word answers, such as:

How many people died during WWII?

Where is the grand canyon located?

How much does the Eiffel tower weigh?

Instead, ask questions that require more elaborate, informative answers. For example:

What were the repercussions from the loss of life in WWII?
*This way, you can work in information about how many people died, while still asking the deeper question about how this loss of life affected the survivors as they tried to rebuild their war torn nations.

What is geographically significant about the Grand Canyon's location?
*This question allows the writer to explain not only where the canyon is located, but what other geographical features are nearby, and how those features effect the canyon (or vice-versa).

What extraordinary challenges did the builders of the Eiffel tower face?
*In this question, the writer can bring the difficult experience of constructing the tower to the forefront of the paper. This question demands the inclusion of a wide variety of interesting facts and perspectives.

These questions will be due Tuesday, May 4th. I will be out until then, so we'll take a short break from Expert papers until I return. Please hold emails until then as well.

Thanks,
Mr. Schmidt
